Taguchi Testing Methods & Web Optimization Information - The Unofficial Site

Taguchi Testing, Taguchi Method A/B Split Testing, Multi-variate testing - What you need to know.

Taguchi Japan Picture   The Shocking Truth about Taguchi and This Advanced Web Optimization Model.

There is one thing you need to keep in mind while investigating this category...

The Taguchi Method is light-years ahead of what most online firms are capable of or interested in. You'd be shocked at how few e-commerce companies even run simple A/B tests these days. Despite the amount of money these companies spend on web analytics software, very few leverage it anywhere near its capabilities, let alone get involved in (or understand) Taguchi testing.

Gen'ichi Taguchi
Born January 1, 1924 in
Tokamachi, Japan.

Who/what is Taguchi?
The Taguchi method was developed by statistician Genichi Taguchi to improve the quality of manufactured goods and it proves to be more widely applicable to a variety of situations where you're testing more than one variable simultaneously.

The key question that Genichi was trying to address was: how many different conditions do you need to experience to be able to reliably ascertain whether "a" is better than "b" or not. For website landing pages, Complex algebraic equations are calculated and you are actually able to pick a winner out of thousands (up to 25,000) combinations of a dozen or more variables with less than 20 different tests. These tests are fed into an algorithm which then isolates the effectiveness of each individual variation.

Using this method, it is common to increase your converstion rates many times over! The Taguchi Method was developed 50 years ago and has been employed with great success to optimize automobile and product manufacturing. Genichi Taguchi devised a methodology for testing multiple variables in the manufacturing process using a subset of the number of tests required by traditional testing methods. In large-scale production scenarios, every test is expensive so the Taguchi Method proved extremely valuable. In addition to reducing the number of sequential test, the Taguchi Method discriminates between signal and noise and estimates the positive or negative value of each element (factor) in each alternative (level).

The Taguchi Method works so well in manufacturing that it is now being applied to traditional advertising, Internet PPC advertising and Landing Pages.

What are the typical steps in a Taguchi Model?

Step 1: Select elements on the landing page that we believe will influence sign-up
Step 2: Create alternatives for each element
Step 3: Create test "recipes" that combine these elements according to the Taguchi Methodology
Step 4: Set up and run a concurrent multi variable test using the Offermatica ASP testing framework Examples: Headline Graphic on left, right, top of page Font selections in Body text, and varying sizes Color schemes in the footer and header Validation logos like Truste, BBB, VISA, MASTER, etc.
